      President’s Message

  • As you know, our chapter takes a break during June, July and August. There will be no members meeting during those months. A lot of us will be out of town. Some of us will be continuing on-going efforts such as the Least Tern project. So let’s look at the year thus far.

Our Distribution List for the dissemination of news contains 62 people. About 50 of them are Audubon members.

More of our members are taking an active role in our chapter operation.
Last month about 40 members were involved in chapter related activity. We are now seeing announcements of meetings and field trips in the media. We also have several new people involved in our Least Tern project.

In Conservation our Least Tern project is expanding into all Beach Nesting Birds. We had about 30 people attend our training workshop. We are in the process of submitting comments on the Ft. Matanzas management plan. And we hosted the Audubon of Florida’s a Northeast Regional Conservation Committee’s meeting.

    Have a Great Summer.

Welcome to our site!

We're delighted you have chosen the official site of the St. Johns County Audubon Society to stop and browse. Located in Northeast Florida, the St. Johns County Audubon Society offers members and visitors spectacular natural habitat: seashores and beaches, salt and fresh water marshes, meadows, rivers, and forests.

Our county is home to the nation's oldest city - historic St. Augustine, FL - and our Bird List contains over 250 species including eagles, ospreys, black-necked stilts, painted buntings, swallow-tailed kites, herons, egrets, hawks, owls, pelicans, and many more.

We welcome guests at our program meetings and field trips. Weave through our nest and enjoy!

Schedule an Audubon Nature Walk for Your Area...You’ll be glad you did!

Won’t you invite us to visit your neighborhood or favorite park?
St. Johns County Audubon members have been leading two-hour nature walks all around the county this spring. The walks are educational, great for the less skilled birder, and always lots of fun! We can plan a morning or late afternoon walk to suit your fancy. Just help us with arrangements and invite your friends. We’ll do the rest.

How are Nature Walks different from regular monthly field trips?
These walks are only in St. Johns County and only two hours long. Thus, they are well-suited to us older folks, to moms whose children are in school during the day, and to anyone who doesn’t have time for longer weekend field trips. Also, we look at all facets of nature and not just birds. We explore the native plants, various critters, scat, and tracks. And what we don’t know, we look up or ask somebody. That’s how we learn.

Read post-trip reports and species lists on our website. For example, our Davis Shores Nature Walk produced 42 species in just two hours in spite of drizzle and gusty wind. The Elkton walkers discovered a surprising diversity of species, and Alpine Groves County Park was full of wild edible plants to nibble on if you were so inclined.
